Hemophilia

Image
#hemophilia Blood needs to clot. It needs to plug the hole so it doesn’t leak out of the hose! When endothelial injury occurs this activates the clotting cascade (extrinsic and intrinsic) Think of the extrinsic pathway as the “quick fix”, like putting duct tape on the hole. It occurs faster, but is less stable. This is fibrin mesh formation and platelet aggregation. You still need the intrinsic pathway to keep going in order to form the more robust clot that will permanently plug that hole. Clotting factors help support the plug. When clot formation is working the way it is supposed to, we form an immediate plug, followed by a delayed more secure clot. BOOK APPOINTMENT Both of them lead to activation of factor X (the common pathway) The intrinsic pathway has a bunch of clotting factors, one activates the other, like dominoes falling. If one of the Domino pieces are missing, the cascade can’t go on, and no “robust” clot will form. Intrinsic pathway deficiencies If factor VIII is ...

Cervical Cancer - Indian Scenario

Image
Cervical cancer Cancer is the uncontrolled growth of body cells and can start almost anywhere in the human body. When cancer develops in the cervix of female it is termed as cervical cancer or cancer cervix. Cervix is the lower part of the uterus and connects the body of the uterus to the vagina (birth canal). The lower part of the cervix (ectocervix) lies within the vagina and the upper two thirds of the cervix (endocervix) lies above the vagina. Most cervical cancers originate in the area where the endocervix and ectocervix join. BOOK APPOINTMENT Cervical cancer is the fourth most common cancer in women worldwide and second most common cancer in women living in less developed regions. World Health Organization (WHO) estimated 530 000 new cases of cervical cancer globally (estimations for 2012), with approximately 270 000 deaths (representing 7.5% of all female cancer deaths). More than 85% of these deaths occurred in low- and middle-income countries. The highest estimated incid...

Lung cancer is more in male patients compared to females. It is the most common type of cancer in male patients in India.  BOOK APPOINTMENT While the data from developed countries is showing declining trend of lung cancer among men, in India, the rates are rising both among male and female population. Incidence of lung cancer increases with age up to sixth decade. A study from...
